What is Pediatric Care?
Pediatricians are doctors that specialize in managing the health of your child, including their physical, behavioral, and mental health issues. They earn this specialization after completing medical school and a three-year residency program in pediatrics. To become a board-certified pediatrician like Dr. York-Fantaci, doctors must also pass rigorous exams given by the American Board of Pediatrics and meet regular education requirements to stay certified.
Your child will visit their pediatrician many times from birth to age two, and at least annually after age five for regular checkups. The pediatrician will also be the first person you call when your child gets sick. To help care for your child’s health, pediatricians do the following:
- Provide annual physical exams
- Administer child vaccinations
- Track milestones in growth, behavior, and skills
- Diagnose and treat illnesses, infections, and injuries
- Provide information to you about your child’s health, safety, nutrition, and fitness needs
- Answer questions you may have about your child’s growth and development
- Refer your child to specialists if expert care is needed
Pediatricians receive special training in children’s health and only see children in their practice, so they have plenty of experience in recognizing and treating childhood illnesses.
